On ridealong Field QA Reviews (remote or in-person), does Rater/RFI verify and document the correct window combinations based on type, U-value, SHGC, orientation, overhang, shading and wall assignment? Does Rater/RFI take any measurements of the windows to verify that plans and as-built windows match, or take full window measurements if no plans to determine total window area? Does Rater/RFI verify overhang dimensions while on-site? ANSI/RESNET/ICC 301 APPENDIX B states, "Each combination of window type U-value, and orientation shall be calculated separately."
- If the windows are all of the same type, but only vary in size, it is acceptable to group window areas by orientation. However, be sure that these groupings are broken out by External Shading features if not all shaded the same (e.g. some windows on the back of the house are shaded by a porch overhang while some are not).
- Where some software allows for an automatic rotation of the orientation of a house, the “front” of the house can easily be lost. For this reason, it is best practice to include the word “front” in the label of at least one of the windows on the front of the house.
SCORING: (These errors are assessed per verified window combination; the same error can occur multiple times on each window combination that exists and should be added to the overall total) "Satisfactory": When no errors in verification "1": One to four errors (listed below) "2": Five to ten errors (listed below) "3": Eleven or more errors (listed below)
GUIDANCE: Windows / Glass Doors Verification Errors - The Rater/RFI can correctly identify or determine the following items: * As-Built Window Area matches Plans or other backup * Construction Type of Windows (Frame Material & Glazing Type) * Orientation of each window * External Shading (Fins or Overhangs) Depth, To Top of Window and To Bottom of Window values * What does not qualify as External Shading (Window screens, security bars, balcony railings, movable awnings, roller shades, and shade from adjacent buildings, trees and shrubs) * If present, As-Built Window Performance from NFRC labels (Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC & U-Value) * If NFRC labels not present, identify alternative methods to determine Window Performance using known window characteristics (NFRC Certified Products Directory, Table 4 in ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals, Chapter 5 or LBL RESFEN 6.0 User Manual, Table 5.5, or Efficient Window Collaborative window selection tool) * Window operability for Natural Ventilation * If a door with fenestration is present, is there enough to identify the entire door area as Fenestration (> 50% required)
