How is Peak Electricity Consumption Calculated?

Modified on Wed, 13 Dec, 2023 at 10:55 AM

In our Fuel Summary reports we include Summer and Winter Peak consumption in kW. These kW values include electricity consumption from all end uses, including HVAC, Water Heating, and Lights/Appliances.

For most states, these are calculated as follows:

  • Summer: average electric consumption at 6pm for the first 30 days in July
  • Winter: average electric consumption at 7am for the first 30 days in January

In Texas and Michigan, we calculate peak electric consumption as described in the Public Utility Commission Technical Reference Manuals. If you need a peak calculation customized for a utility program in a different state, please reach out to programsupport@ekotrope.com.
