R-Values on Different Reports in Ekotrope

Modified on Tue, 08 Aug 2023 at 10:38 AM

Different reports in Ekotrope can show different insulation R-Values for envelope components in your project. Some reports will show the "nominal" value, while others will report the "effective" value. The difference between these two values is explained below:

Nominal R-Value

This is the “labeled rating” of the insulation material(s) before installation. This will be the sum of all of the insulation materials' R-values that are entered into the wall assembly.

Effective R-Value

This is the thermal resistivity of the insulation post-installation, which looks at the entire assembly and takes things like thermal bridging into account. This is what is shown on the assembly calculator. It may be lower than the nominal r-value.

The reports in Ekotrope that show the Nominal R-Value are as follows:

  • HERS Certificate

  • HERS Certificate (As-Modeled)

  • HERS Label

  • ENERGY STAR Certificates

  • IECC Certificates

The reports in Ekotrope that show the Effective R-Value are as follows:

  • HERS Rated/Reference Home Summaries

  • IECC Proposed/Reference Home Summaries

  • NGBS Proposed/Reference Home Summaries

  • Building Specification Summary

  • Building Summary
