Why are energy bills and energy consumption different for the same home on different reports, like the HERS Certificate, the Fuel Summary, the IECC reports, and the Quick Results panel?
Generally, this is due to different assumptions for the various codes and standards, such as thermostat setpoints and utility rates. The table below shows high level differences between the assumptions for various reports in Ekotrope:
Category | Quick Results Energy Bills, HERS Certificate Energy Bills, Fuel Summary | HERS Fuel Summary Comparison | IECC Performance and IECC Fuel Summary Comparison* |
Thermostat Setpoints | As modeled in the Usage Info tab | 68F heating, 78F cooling | 68F heating, 78F cooling for IECC 2006 72F heating, 75F cooling for IECC 2009 - 2021 |
Air Conditioning | As modeled | As modeled, with a default AC if none is modeled | As modeled, with a default AC if none is modeled |
Water Heating | As modeled | As modeled | As modeled, except tankless systems are converted to default tank systems |
Utility Rates | As modeled | As modeled | State averages per fuel type pulled from the EIA |
*Most energy codes in Ekotrope, including state energy codes are based on IECC and the reports for those codes will have the same assumptions as the IECC reports.
