Modeling Crawlspaces

Determine if the Crawlspace is Conditioned or Not

To determine if a home has a conditioned crawlspace please determine where the primary thermal and air barrier is.  If the barrier is in the framed floor over the crawl, the crawlspace should be assumed to be unconditioned.  If the barrier is in the crawlspace walls and crawlspace floor then the crawlspace should be modeled as a conditioned crawlspace.

Modeling Unconditioned Crawlspaces

If the crawlspace is unconditioned then the framed floor over the crawlspace should be modeled and the crawlspace walls and floor should not.  When modeling the floor, please specify whether the Floor is located above a Vented or Unvented Crawl.

Modeling Conditioned Crawlspaces

If the crawlspace is conditioned then the crawlspace walls should be modeled as foundation walls and floor should be modeled as a slab.  The framed floor over the crawl should not be modeled.  While modeling the slab and foundation walls, make sure to specify Encloses: Conditioned Crawlspace.  Even if the crawlspace floor is just dirt, it should still be modeled as a slab.
